Restaurants Gloucester
Ever since I was a child, Gloucester has always had a fascination for me and going to restaurants in Gloucester with my Granny was a real treat. We'd always take the double decker bus there and there'd be an anticipation of where we go for lunch, or even coffee (and cakes!) One of the pleasures of Gloucester was the seeming maze of alleys that led off the main streets, inot such delights as corners of the cathedral and comic shops selling Marvel masterpieces.
Off to a restaurant in Gloucester we would go where I would duly unwrap my comic from its protective cellophane wrapper and inspect it with holy reverence. Meanwhile, one of the waiters would be arranging the tea and cakes to the side, carefully so as not to disturb the unfolding ceremony. After lunch (or elevenses) it would be time to leave the Gloucester restaurant and go in search of more alleyways, this time leading to secret market corners and the possibility of more presents!
Of course this was in the late sixties and early seventies. It seems to me that as of now, much of the restaurant landscape in Gloucester is unchanged. By that I mean the restaurants are still there, but the names and owners may have changed. Nowadays, I can imagine todays plethora of Cheltenham kids being unloaded off the same bus and being marched to the delights of the docks - something which wasn't at the tourist attraction status it's achieved now - I almost wish I was small again!
I would endeavour to recommend the fish and chip restaurant in Hare Lane, by the cathedral, but I don't know if it's still there! I must get over to Gloucester and check out how the restaurant landscape is changing - just in case it is! Of course I know I won't find any elvers in the indoor market, the French dining tables have bagged everything the Severn can produce, so I'll have to find a new treat when I go to restaurants Gloucester.
